Jumbo had a clear data strategy that needed to be implemented across eight IT data teams. But how? Challenges abounded: stalled processes, teams working as islands and fragmented platforms. Blenddata thought along and brought the structure and acceleration needed to make the strategy work.

Critical questions instead of PowerPoints

According to Mark, Blenddata inspired immediate trust. “They don’t think in PowerPoints but pragmatically, and kept asking questions to get to the bottom of our problem. We were not looking for a supplier who takes over everything, but a partner who works together and helps us move forward.”

Mark Suurland: “They have chosen their name very nicely. There are few suppliers who think and participate in the organisation to this extent. Jumbo was looking for a party for the overall picture. Mark Suurland: “Roel took on the role of data architect and then handed it over. Harm took care of coordination with the product teams and contributed ideas on the larger themes at MT level. In many conversations, Blenddata put potential data problems within the entire Jumbo organisation on the table and showed leadership.”

Focus on consultancy complemented by technology

Change Manager Harm Hoebergen was point of contact for Jumbo’s MT IT on the larger themes. Together with Roel, he guided the transition from drawing board to implementation. This prepared the organisation for the next phase.

Harm: “This collaboration shows how we like to work together as Blenddata. We mirrored our experience from other customers to the situation at Jumbo and then determined the right next steps together with Jumbo. Not only strategically but also practically; two of our data engineers support Jumbo’s team on an ongoing basis.”

Data Architect Roel Smits: “When we started this collaboration, there was disconnected autonomy: many islands and too little collective Jumbo. We just didn’t manage to implement the recently developed data strategy. We occasionally took on the role of breaker. We provided an external vision of the organisation and brought knowledge from outside to inside Jumbo.”

“Our advice: go live and start finding customers to use it. Instead of continuing to develop and make it technically perfect, we reduced the platform to something good enough to go live. It’s a foundation that the whole data organisation can build on.”
